Why I Don’t Design Based on Pinterest Boards
Pinterest is a great place to explore ideas.
But I don’t design from it.
Because the moment a space starts becoming a collection of references, it slowly loses its own identity. You’re no longer designing for a person — you’re assembling a version of something that already exists.
And that rarely feels right.
When I start a project, I’m more interested in understanding how someone lives than what they’ve saved. What feels comfortable to them. What they naturally gravitate towards. What they don’t even realise they need yet.
References can show you what you like visually.
But they don’t tell you how you want to live.
I’ve seen beautifully replicated spaces that look perfect — but feel disconnected. Because they were never designed for that specific life, that specific routine.
For me, design is not about recreating an image.
It’s about creating something that couldn’t belong to anyone else.
Something that feels personal, effortless, and real.
So I may look at references —
but I never let them decide the space.
