We often choose curtains at the very end of a project — after the furniture, colours and finishes are decided.

But curtains have their own personalities.

A Ripple Fold curtain feels clean and contemporary because its soft, continuous waves create very little visual noise. A Pinch Pleat curtain feels more tailored and traditional, almost like a perfectly cut suit.

Then there is the Eyelet curtain. Its larger, relaxed folds give a more casual and effortless character, while a Rod Pocket curtain creates a softer, simpler appearance because the rod almost disappears into the fabric.

For a more dramatic room, Goblet Pleats can bring an old-world, luxurious quality. And when you want the window to feel taller and grander, floor-to-ceiling curtains can completely change the proportions of a space.

But my favourite trick is often layering.

A sheer curtain + blackout curtain isn't simply about controlling sunlight. The sheer softens the daylight during the day, while the heavier layer changes the atmosphere completely at night. One window can therefore have two personalities.

Even the direction of the folds matters. Dense folds feel richer. Wider, relaxed folds feel lighter. A heavier fabric makes the window feel grounded; a translucent fabric makes it almost disappear.

So before choosing a curtain, don't only ask:

“Which fabric do I like?”

Ask:

“What personality should this window have?”

Because sometimes, the most beautiful part of a room isn't what is hanging on the wall.

It's what is moving gently in front of it.
